For 2021, World Sight Day falls on October 14th – and this year’s theme is #loveyoureyes, a celebration of vision and everything it enables us to do.

But did you know that almost everyone on earth will experience changes to their eyes at some point in their life? So even if you think you have perfect vision, it’s important to take care of your eyes now so they stay in good health for years to come.

Your eyes are not only a window to the soul – an eye examination can give you a view into your general health, too. As well as detecting changing prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses, regular eye tests can help us spot certain conditions early, such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure

The NHS recommends that you have your eyes tested every two years or more often if your family has a history of certain eye conditions. So if you’re due a test this year, or perhaps you’ve never had one before, it’s time to book an appointment now. Whether you’re confident your eyes are fine or you’ve noticed some changes in your vision lately, Leightons can offer you an eye test with one of our qualified optometrists. Call 0800 40 20 20 today to speak to our dedicated patient care team or book an appointment online for a time that’s convenient for you.

The 4 Ps of #LoveYourEyes

World Sight Day slogan 'Prevent, Protect, Preserve, Prioritise'.

While booking an eye test should be your number-one priority, The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness has created a guide to good eye health. Here are the four ‘Ps’ to ensure you #LoveYourEyes.

Prevent Much deteriorating eye health can be prevented easily by leading a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy balanced diet full of vitamins and minerals, controlling obesity and diabetes, quitting smoking, cutting down on drinking and staying active with exercise.

Protect You can take care of your eyes in various ways, such as protecting them from bright sunlight and UV rays with a quality pair of sunglasses. You should also be sure to take care with cosmetic products in your eye area and avoid strain from looking at computer screens while working for long periods.

Preserve & Prioritise The best way to preserve your eye health is to prioritise a comprehensive and regular eye examination. This way, any changes over time can be identified, and your optometrist will have a full view of any degeneration in your sight. Any issues can be treated as early as possible.

Make sure to spread awareness this World Sight Day by telling your friends and family to #lovetheireyes and prioritise eye wellness. At Leightons, you can book eye tests for the whole family and be safe in the knowledge that you’re all on your way to better eye health.

To book you can call our Dedicated Patient Support team on 0800 40 20 20, or book an appointment online. We look forward to seeing you soon!
