Branch Manager & Dispensing Optician

Michelle joined Leightons Opticians as an Optical Assistant in 1995, going on to train as a Dispensing Optician and qualifying in 2008. Michelle has been our manager in Poole for over ten years, building up our excellent team while also maintaining a branch ethos focused on clinical excellence and dedicated aftercare to all our patients. Michelle’s highly professional and honest approach, teamed with her keen eye for detail, means that many patients trust in Michelle with the dispensing of their spectacles and their eye care needs, year on year.

Keith Tempany

Keith Tempany

Branch Director & Contact Lens Optician

Keith has specialised in contact lenses for the past 30 years. He is a Fellow of the BCLA and course lead for their Myopia Management Certificate, having retired from the Executive Council after 13 years on the board. He has an international reputation as a contact lens specialist, having lectured and written articles on contact lenses and dry eye both in the UK and abroad, and has worked with many of the contact lens manufacturers as a Key Opinion Leader and as Clinical Investigator on several scientific studies. He was awarded Contact Lens Practitioner of the Year in the 2010 and 2014 National Optician Awards, which reflects his enthusiasm for his work with multifocal and specialist contact lenses such as those for keratoconus and irregular corneas. He has since been asked to sit on the judging panel of the awards. He is a member of the European Academy of Orthokeratology & Myopia Control and the Scleral Lens Education Society.

Audiologist

Katy graduated from University of Southampton with an Audiology BSc degree, and has been helping those with hearing impairment and their families since. Having divided her time between working with the NHS and private clinics, Katy enjoys the personal approach to hearing care that Leightons can offer. With a hearing loss herself, and access to a wide variety of treatments, this has inspired her commitment to excellent customer care. Outside her role at Leightons, Katy is also an enthusiastic yoga instructor and enjoys spending quality time with her family.

Liny Thorpe

Optometrist

Liny joined us in 2014 after moving back to Dorset. She qualified as an optometrist in 2005 and has over 16 years' experience in both the multiple and independent sectors. Liny is a key member of our established team and much liked by many of our patients, who like to see her year on year for their eye examinations and ongoing care. In her spare time, Liny enjoys running and travelling.

Richard Irvine

Contact Lens Optician

Richard has been with Leightons for over 40 years, first as a Trainee Dispensing Optician, qualifying as a Dispensing Optician and thereafter taking on the role of Branch Manager of Poole at its previous premises on the High Street. Richard is now our Contact Lens Optician, with a sizable following of patients that like to see him for their ongoing contact lens care. Outside of work, Richard enjoys active sports like running and cycling, which he does competitively, travelling across the globe to take part in events.

Cliff Rees

Optometrist

Cliff retired from his own group of independent practices in the North East of England, moving south to be close to his grandchildren. Cliff is a graduate member of the British Psychology Society and worked in independent practice as a Behavioural Optometrist, specialising in children with difficulty acquiring literacy skills and the visual rehabilitation of adults who have suffered brain trauma. What little spare time Cliff has outside of his optometry and grandparent duties is given over to his lifetime studies of golf and bridge.

David Heptinstall

Dispensing Optician

David joined Leightons as a Trainee Dispensing Optician in the old Christchurch branch nearly 40 years ago. After qualifying, he stayed there for several years before embarking on relief manager duties, allowing him to travel to virtually all the Leightons branches! Once he had tired of all the driving, David returned to Poole Branch as a full time Dispensing Optician. In his spare time he enjoys theatre, grandparent duties and regular trips to the Isle of Wight with his wife and their little Norfolk Terrier.

Dispensing Optician

Eddy joined Leightons in 2010 and shortly after became a Trainee Dispensing Optician. He prides himself on the experience he has gained at Leightons in dispensing spectacles and strives to provide the best advice on bespoke lenses to suit different visual needs. After qualifying, Eddy worked on our Pulse team, working in many of the our branches, before becoming settled at our Southampton branch and, in 2021, also joined our team in Poole as Assistant Manager Outside of work, he enjoys boxing training and is also a Game of Thrones fan.

Trainee Dispensing Optician

Toby joined Leightons as an Optical & Hearing Assistant in August 2019 after transitioning into optics from the education industry. As a Trainee Dispensing Optician with an academic background, Toby operates at the cutting edge of current dispensing practice, with an enthusiastic ethos of precision and patient-centred care, in offering the best frame and lens solution for each individual. Toby divides his time between our branches in Poole and Southampton. Outside of work, Toby is involved in Scouting as a leader and also enjoys playing the viola with the Westbourne Orchestral Society, for which he is a trustee and Honorary Treasurer.

Molly Dunford

Trainee Dispensing Optician

Molly joined us in 2020 as an Optical & Hearing Assistant, with a clear view to pursuing a career in optics. She has become an asset to our team and shows great dedication to patient care, making sure everyone feels welcome and well looked after. Molly has just started her journey as Trainee Dispensing Optician and is looking forward to getting stuck in and learning new skills; she is particularly looking forward to learning all about the anatomy of the eye and ocular health.

Dóra Mikecz

Trainee Dispensing Optician

Dóra has worked in optics since 2015, starting her journey as a Dispensing Assistant at Boots before joining the family Leightons at Raxworthy’s in Christchurch. As a Trainee Dispensing Optician, Dóra enjoys learning all about the theory of optics and lenses, utilising that knowledge within her daily dispensing practice. Dóra divides her time between our branches in Christchurch and Poole, where she has become a valued member of a team. Outside of work, Dora is a keen traveller and has visited many countries around the world on her backpacking adventures.

Optical & Hearing Assistant

June joined the team at Poole Branch in 2016 and loves the variety across all the different aspects of her role as an Optical & Hearing Assistant. She has worked for large corporate companies in the past, and joining a smaller, established team was a refreshing and interesting change. June has gained a great knowledge of optics in her time at Leightons and has helped train many new staff members. June has shown commitment to her role in completing the ABDO College Optical Assistant Course.

Ellie Smithers

Ellie is the latest addition to our team, having joined us in 2021. Coming to us straight from college, Ellie quickly immersed herself within our team and continues to show enthusiasm and determination in becoming au fait with all the aspects of her role and in developing a good rapport with our patients. Ellie now divides her time between our branches in Poole and Christchurch.
