What is an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a medically trained eye physician and surgeon, or “eye doctor”. They are qualified to diagnose and treat injuries and conditions in and around the eye. They differ from optometrists, who carry out eye tests, diagnose sight conditions and prescribe glasses or contact lenses, in that only an ophthalmologist is medically trained.
