What is the Audible Contrast Threshold test?

The ACT™ test measures how clearly you can hear speech when other sounds are around. It helps us see how your brain processes sound contrast - that is, how easily you can focus on speech in real-life environments like cafés, meetings, or busy streets.

How does the ACT™ hearing test work?

During the test, you’ll wear comfortable headphones in a quiet, soundproof room. You’ll hear a mix of background noises with subtle speech-like sounds hidden within them. Each time you detect the sound, you’ll press a button.

This simple and non-invasive test helps us identify the exact point where your hearing starts to struggle with speech-in-noise. We combine your ACT™ results with other tests, such as pure tone audiometry and speech assessments, to give a complete picture of your hearing.

Benefits of the Audible Contrast Threshold test

1

More accurate results

The ACT™ test provides valuable insights into how well you hear speech in background noise - something traditional tests can’t always reveal. This means our audiologists can make more precise recommendations tailored to your daily listening needs.

2

More effective hearing aid fittings

Because we understand how you hear in real-world situations, we can fine-tune your hearing aids to perform at their best - helping you follow conversations more comfortably, wherever you are.

Why this ACT™ test matters

Traditional hearing tests measure your ability to hear tones at different pitches, but they don’t always reflect how you hear in busy environments. The ACT™ Test fills that gap.

By understanding your speech-in-noise hearing ability, we can recommend solutions that truly match your lifestyle - from the right technology level in hearing aids to personalised listening strategies that make everyday life clearer and more enjoyable.
