Why are eye tests important?

Eye tests are important for several reasons, and not just for your sight! Your eyes can be the window into the health of your body. Regular eye tests can help:

  • Your vision, showing whether any correction is needed.
  • Detect early signs of sight-threatening conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, particularly through our Ultimate Eye Examination.
  • Detect signs of other possible health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and vascular disease.

It is also important to have regular eye tests, at intervals as recommended by your optometrist. This helps us to detect any changes in your vision or the health of your eyes as soon as possible. Of course, the sooner any changes are identified, the sooner we can help you manage them.

What happens during a Leightons eye test?

Every Leightons eye test is a detailed, personalised experience - never rushed, always focused on your comfort and care. We use advanced equipment for precise results, and take the time to explain everything clearly. You’ll leave with expert advice, not just a prescription - and if you’d like, our team can help you explore frames, lenses or contact lenses to suit your lifestyle.

Our regular eye test normally lasts around 30 minutes.

You may want to give yourself additional time to try something new like the comfort of contact lenses, or select frames and lenses from our beautiful range of glasses and sunglasses.

The Ultimate Eye Test

Our Ultimate Eye Test gives you the most comprehensive view of your eye health, using pioneering technology to see 65% more of your eyes above what is available in a standard eye test.

It captures 2D and 3D pictures of your eyes using Optomap and OCT.

  • Optomap allows us to take an incredibly detailed image of your retina (the back of the eye) and shows up to 80% of the surface in one ultra-wide panoramic view.

  • OCT is a bit like an ultrasound using light and takes a scan of the layers beneath the central retina, giving a cross-section image that helps the optometrist build a complete picture of your eye health.

We highly recommend this to our patients of all ages. Additional charges from £60 may apply.
