When the eyelid margins are not clean and healthy, the tiny oil glands in your eyelids cannot function properly. This means your tears evaporate more quickly, leading to irritation, dryness and fluctuating vision.

At Leightons, we offer NuLids and BlephEx, professional in-practice eyelid exfoliation treatments designed to deeply cleanse the eyelid margins and gently massage the meibomian glands.

What are NuLids & BlephEx?

NuLids and BlephEx are advanced eyelid exfoliation treatments performed by trained optometrists. Both use a specialised device to clean the eyelashes and eyelid margins, helping to manage blepharitis and improve dry eye symptoms.

While cleaning the eyelid margins, both treatments also gently massage the meibomian glands. This encourages the release of natural oils that thicken and stabilise your tear layer, helping prevent dry eye and improve visual clarity.

Both treatments aim to:

  • Remove debris and bacteria from the lash line
  • Reduce inflammation and irritation
  • Improve daily eyelid hygiene
  • Support natural oil flow from the meibomian glands
  • Improve tear stability
  • Reduce the frequency of blepharitis flare-ups

Most patients notice their eyelids feel lighter, cleaner and more comfortable immediately after treatment.

What happens during your appointment?

Your optometrist may recommend eyelid exfoliation during your dry eye assessment, a separate appointment designed to identify the type and severity of your dry eye. According to your symptoms, NuLids or BlephEx may be recommended as part of your personalised treatment plan. Here’s what to expect during the treatment appointment:

While you are seated comfortably, your optometrist may apply local anaesthetic drops if needed. The treatment focuses on the eyelids rather than the eyeitself, butnumbing drops can help reduce blinking and make the procedure more comfortable.

A single-use tip is attached to the device.

  • BlephEx uses a soft sponge tip.
  • NuLids uses a soft silicone tip.

A specialist cleaning gel or foam is applied to the tip to support effective and comfortable exfoliation.

The device is gently moved along your upper and lower lash margins to remove debris and massage the meibomian glands. Each eyelid is treated for around 60 seconds, depending on what is needed and what feels comfortable.

You may notice a light vibration, but it should not be painful.

Any remaining gel is wiped away and your eyes may be gently rinsed. The solution is safe and does not sting.

The procedure is non-invasive, your vision is unaffected, and you can drive straight afterwards. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, the treatment can be paused.

Who are NuLids and BlephEx treatments suitable for?

This treatment may be suitable if you experience:

  • Gritty or sandy sensations
  • Crusting along the lash line
  • Red or irritated eyelids
  • Recurrent blepharitis
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Evaporative dry eye
  • Dry eye that hasn’t improved with drops alone
  • Fluctuating vision throughout the day

For many patients, eyelid exfoliation becomes an important part of ongoing dry eye management.

How Nulids and BlephEx help with blepharitis and dry eye

Blepharitis causes inflammation and debris to build up along the eyelid margins. Over time, this blocks the meibomian glands and prevents them from releasing the protective oils your tears need.

Professional eyelid exfoliation breaks this cycle. By clearing the build-up and stimulating the glands, NuLids and BlephEx help restore healthier tear function and improve comfort.

Removes debris and bacteria

Gently exfoliates the lash line to remove hardened debris, bacteria and biofilm that contribute to inflammation and irritation.

Improves meibomian gland function

Massages the eyelids while cleaning, helping the glands release natural oils that thicken and stabilise your tear layer.

Reduces tear evaporation

Healthier oil flow slows tear evaporation, which helps relieve dryness, burning and fluctuating vision.

Supports long-term comfort

Regular eyelid exfoliation can be a key part of managing blepharitis and dry eye. By keeping your lid margins clear, it helps support healthy oil production, promoting comfort and eye health.
