What is LLLT?

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, is an advanced, non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate healing and restore the function of the meibomian glands - the tiny oil glands in your eyelids that play a crucial role in keeping your eyes hydrated.

When these glands become blocked or don’t produce enough oil, your tears can evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and redness. LLLT works by gently warming the tissues and improving gland performance, helping your eyes stay naturally lubricated.

LLLT therapy helps to:

  • Stimulate meibomian gland activity
  • Reduce inflammation and improve tear film quality
  • Relieve redness, burning, and dryness
  • Support healthy, comfortable eyes

What happens during treatment?

Before your treatment begins, your optometrist will talk you through each step so you know exactly what to expect. The procedure is simple, painless, and designed for your comfort.

Preparation

You’ll relax in a comfortable position while the LLLT mask is placed over your face.

Light Therapy

The mask emits gentle red and near-infrared light to stimulate the glands and surrounding tissues.

The treatment lasts for around 30 minutes. During this time, you might feel a mild warmth, which most patients find relaxing. The light works deep within the skin to stimulate healing, improve oil flow from your glands, and calm inflammation.

Once your session is complete, you can continue your day as normal - there’s no discomfort, downtime, or side effects.

Who Can Benefit from LLLT?

You may be suitable for LLLT treatment if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with dry eye disease or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
  • Experience symptoms such as burning, itching, redness, or a gritty sensation
  • Have not found sufficient relief from artificial tears or warm compresses
  • Are not suitable for IPL therapy due to skin type or sensitivity

Your optometrist will first carry out a comprehensive Dry Eye Assessment to determine if LLLT is the most suitable treatment for your eyes.

Treatment plan and results

Most patients typically benefit from four LLLT sessions, spaced one to two weeks apart. This treatment schedule gives your eyes time to respond naturally and regain comfort. Your optometrist may recommend maintenance sessions every few months to help sustain results.

After completing your course of treatment, you may notice:

Smoother, more comfortable eyes

Less dryness, burning, or irritation

Reduced redness and inflammation

Better overall eye hydration

Some patients notice improvement after the first session, while others feel gradual relief throughout the treatment plan.
