Personalised care, supported by advanced imaging

Your retinal photographs are reviewed alongside the other results from your eye examination, allowing your optometrist to consider your eye health, vision, medical history and individual risk factors together.

Where appropriate, your optometrist will show you the images and talk you through their findings, so you leave your appointment with a clearer understanding of your eyes and any recommended next steps.

Digital retinal photography can support:

  • Routine monitoring of your eye health
  • Comparison between current and previous examinations
  • Closer observation of an existing area of interest
  • Clinical decision-making and onward referral when required
  • Clearer conversations between you and your optometrist

Part of your Leightons eye examination

Digital retinal photography is included within our private eye examinations. Depending on the eye test type you've booked, we may use a range of advanced imaging techniques, including:

Retinal photography can also be added to your NHS-funded eye test for a small additional fee.

The imaging process is quick, comfortable and completely non-contact, carried out by a trained member of our team. Your optometrist will then carefully review the results alongside the rest of your eye examination, helping to build a complete picture of your eye health.

Ongoing monitoring you can rely on

One of the key benefits of digital retinal photography is continuity in your eye care. Your optometrist can:

Compare

current images with previous ones taken at earlier appointments.

Monitor

whether your retina has remained stable or changed over time.

Maintaining

a long-term view of your eye health supports a more proactive approach to care.

Tailor

future recommendations to your individual optical needs.

Retinal photography, Optomap and OCT

Retinal photography – 45-degree retinal fundus photography – is the standard form of retinal imaging we offer at Leightons as part of our Standard Eye Test. Optomap and OCT are available with our Enhanced Eye Test and Ultimate Eye Test, and may be recommended as part of a more detailed comprehensive eye examination.

Each test provides different information about your eyes. If anything requires a closer look, your optometrist may also recommend a follow-up appointment for more detailed testing. They will always talk you through what is advised and why, and arrange any additional appointments at a time that suits you.

For a fuller explanation of how the technologies differ, read our guide to what retinal photography is and how it compares with OCT and Optomap.
