At Leightons, we use BlefaCalm, a soothing tea tree oil-based gel, as part of a professional in-practice treatment that helps calm irritation, clear debris and restore comfort to your eyelids.

What is BlefaCalm?

BlefaCalm is a refreshing, rinsable gel formulated with tea tree oil (TTO), known for its natural cleansing and calming properties. It is designed specifically for the delicate eyelid area, helping to gently remove debris, bacteria and excess oils that can build up around the lash line.

This build-up is one of the common causes of blepharitis, leading to redness, irritation and discomfort. BlefaCalm helps restore comfort by:

  • Refreshing the eyelid margins
  • Reducing bacterial load
  • Helping prevent future flare-ups
  • Supporting a healthy tear film

The gel creates a cooling, calming sensation and is applied by your optometrist as part of a professionally guided treatment. Most people notice an immediate improvement in how their eyelids feel.

During your visit, your optometrist may also share simple at‑home tips and routines to help you keep your eyelids comfortable and maintain the benefits of your treatment.

What happens during your appointment?

Your BlefaCalm treatment is carried out by one of our trained optometrists in a calm, comfortable setting. It follows your dry eye assessment, ensuring the treatment is tailored to your symptoms. A Dry Eye Assessment, separate from a routine sight test, is a dedicated appointment that helps identify the type and severity of dry eye and allows your optometrist to create a personalised management plan.

The procedure is based on our approved clinical steps and is designed to feel soothing throughout.

Your optometrist opens the Blefacalm kit in front of you and prepares the materials. A gentle, single-use heat mask is placed over your eyes to warm the eyelid glands.

Over the next few minutes, this helps soften any blocked oils and prepares the eyelids for treatment.

Once the warmth has taken effect, your optometrist performs meibomian gland expression and debridement. This gently releases trapped oils and removes any build-up that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Most patients describe this step as unusual but not painful, and often surprisingly relieving.

Using a soft cotton swab soaked in Blefacalm gel, your optometrist works carefully along your upper and lower lash lines, exfoliating the area for around 5–6 minutes.

This helps lift away oils, flakes and bacteria from the lash margin, leaving the eyelids feeling cleaner and calmer.

To finish, your optometrist gently rinses the area with sterile saline to remove any residue. Your eyelids are left feeling refreshed, clean and noticeably more comfortable.

Most patients say the treatment feels cooling, soothing and deeply relieving.
