Meet Marc Binke
He swapped a multinational for a high-flying franchise
Twelve years ago Marc Binke was working for a national multiple opticians, but wanted to run his own business with more control, greater job satisfaction and better financial rewards.
“I had reached a plateau and knew that I wasn’t making enough financially to achieve the kind of life I wanted. Most importantly, I’d always wanted to work for myself.”
Fortunately, fate intervened: Marc spotted an advert for a qualified optician to join Leightons’ expanding franchise group in a trade magazine.
Just ten days later he was meeting the management team to discuss the offering, which involved acquiring a small independent opticians business located in Leadenhall Street in the City of London.
We’re with you every step
“Buying a business was totally new to me, but that didn’t matter as Leightons looked after all aspects of the acquisition. They sourced the opportunity, negotiated and agreed the purchase price and tied up the legal aspects.”
“I liked the company and what it stood for – the fact it was a family business and all about quality products and service,” recalled Marc.
Making the difficult stuff easy
“Sometimes with a completely independent opticians, the public are not sure if they’ll still be around in six months. Plus, there is no way I could have set up a business like this 12 years ago without the support of Leightons, especially in terms of dealing with shop fitters, leases, suppliers and working with solicitors, accountants etc. which of course was all new to me. I couldn’t have borrowed the money from the bank and the landlord wouldn’t have given me a lease without the stamp of approval that Leightons’ 80 years of trading represented.”
“What I’m most proud of is the fact I run a successful business due to the decisions I have taken rather than simply turning up Monday to Friday and being told what to do.”
Running a franchise is hard work, but you can reap the rewards. 100% of the profits are yours to keep and the business is 100% owned by you.
Marc says, “I’m far better off financially than I would have been and I have a far greater level of professional satisfaction than I did before; so for anyone considering becoming a franchisee I would say just do it, put the hard work in and enjoy the rewards.”
Marc is now in his 12th year as a Leightons Franchise; his practice is located just moments from the busy Leadenhall Street market and the famous Gherkin building in the City of London.
