Jun 28, 2015 in Events
Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of sight loss in the western world. It is a range of conditions which affect the central part of the retina and cause a loss of central vision. It is far more common later in life. You can help reduce the risk factors for and the effect of the condition by ceasing smoking, protecting your eyes from harmful rays of light from the sun with sunglasses and a brimmed hat eating a healthy diet containing antioxidant vitamins A, Beta Carotene and Vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin found in dark green vegetables such as kale and spinach, red peppers, corn and eggs. Omega-3 oils are also an essential ‘eye’ nutrient found on oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines as is Zinc which is found in red meat and shellfish. The Macular Society’s Macular Awareness week is 6 to 12 July so its no better time to have an OCT scan at Leightons and have the reassurance your macula is healthy.
At Leightons our OCT takes up to 53,000 scans per second and is sensitive to just 4 micrometres, That’s 4 millionths of a metre. The scans are reviewed using sophisticated computer software and are accurately compared the next time we take them to rule out any potential progression.
