Contact Lenses That Can Improve Your Vision
Mar 26, 2015 in Eye Care
Technology has constantly been innovating and coming up with solutions for vision problems – from smart glasses that can help the blind see, to spectacles that can pinpoint the onset of eye diseases. Researchers are now working on contact lenses that can be of great help to people with advanced vision problems, which is a boon since almost 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss.
Smart Lenses
Sight loss can affect people at any age, but it’s the elderly that are most at risk. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in adults. AMD is a painless condition but it leads to a gradual loss in central vision. It affects the macula, which is a tiny part of the retina at the back of the eye. AMD can make your vision blurry or distorted, and may lead to a blank patch in the centre of your vision. Optics specialists from Switzerland have developed a new contact lens and glasses combination, which is equipped with telescopic contact lenses. These lenses can magnify objects 2.8 times and allow the user to control the zoom feature with eye blinks. The developers are working to make them more comfortable and breathable, so that the eyes have a steady supply of oxygen. These lenses offer new hope for people with AMD and will soon be clinically trialled.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses have been useful in correcting many vision problems. Specially designed toric lenses are used to correct astigmatism – blurry image caused due to the cornea not being perfectly spherical. Toric lenses are specially shaped to create different refractive (focussing) powers on vertical and horizontal orientations, which help in correcting astigmatism. These lenses have to be prescribed and fitted by an optometrist or contact lens optician.
Presbyopia affects many people over the age of 40, where the eye gradually loses its ability to see objects up close. Multifocal contact lenses allow you to see both near and far, and save you the hassle of reading or bifocal glasses. Of course, contact lenses can also be used for purely cosmetic purposes with coloured contact lenses being a popular fashion accessory. Depending on your requirements, you can choose from daily disposable, reusable as well as extended wear contact lenses from our range.
